brevetoxin

Brevetoxin is a natural toxin produced by certain marine microscopic algae called dinoflagellates, especially during harmful algal blooms known as red tides. When these algae proliferate, they release brevetoxins into the water, which can accumulate in shellfish and fish. If humans eat contaminated seafood or come into contact with the toxin in the water, they may experience health issues such as respiratory problems, skin irritation, or neurological symptoms. Brevetoxins affect nerve cells by disrupting their normal communication, leading to these symptoms. Monitoring and controlling shellfish harvesting are key to preventing brevetoxin-related illnesses.
