Brazil's Independence
Brazil's independence was achieved on September 7, 1822, when Prince Pedro, leading the Portuguese colony, declared itself independent from Portugal. This sense of national unity grew from dissatisfaction with Portuguese control and economic interests, culminating in Pedro's iconic "Independence or Death" proclamation along the banks of the Ipiranga River. Unlike other Latin American countries that gained independence through lengthy wars, Brazil's transition involved negotiated steps, with Portugal recognizing its autonomy in 1825. This event marked the birth of the Brazilian Empire, establishing a sovereign nation while maintaining a monarchy led by Emperor Pedro I.
