Box C/D and Box H/ACA snoRNAs
Box C/D and Box H/ACA snoRNAs are specialized RNA molecules that help produce functional ribosomal RNA (rRNA), essential for protein synthesis in cells. Box C/D snoRNAs guide chemical modifications called methylation on specific rRNA sites, optimizing ribosome function. Box H/ACA snoRNAs direct the conversion of certain uridine nucleotides into pseudouridine, improving rRNA stability and activity. Each class contains characteristic sequence motifs (boxes) that facilitate their interaction with protein complexes, ensuring precise modification of rRNA during its maturation process. These snoRNAs are crucial for maintaining proper cell function and efficient protein production.
