Bootlegging

Bootlegging refers to the illegal production, distribution, or sale of goods—most commonly alcohol, drugs, or copyrighted materials—without proper authorization or licensing. Historically, it involved illicitly manufacturing or smuggling alcohol during Prohibition in the United States. Today, the term can also apply to unauthorized copying and selling of software, music, movies, or other intellectual property. Essentially, bootlegging bypasses legal channels, often to avoid taxes, regulations, or licensing requirements, making it a form of illegal trade that undermines authorized industries and legal standards.
