Bolivian government's coca policies
The Bolivian government traditionally tolerated limited coca leaf cultivation for cultural and traditional reasons, viewing it as part of local identity. However, it strictly opposes large-scale cocaine production and trafficking. Under President Morales (2006–2019), policies aimed to regulate and legalize small-scale coca farming, allowing farmers to grow a legal amount. The government conducts controlled coca harvesting and eradication campaigns to combat drug trafficking, balancing respect for indigenous practices with efforts to curb illegal drug trade. This approach seeks to acknowledge cultural significance while addressing national and international concerns about drug abuse and trafficking.
