Boabdil's surrender
Boabdil, the last king of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, on January 2, 1492. This event marked the end of Muslim rule in Spain after nearly 800 years. Facing military defeat and dwindling support, Boabdil accepted terms that allowed him and his people to leave Granada peacefully. His surrender symbolized the unification of Spain under Christian rule and was significant in the broader context of the Reconquista, the era of territorial reclamation from Muslim rulers. This pivotal moment also paved the way for Spain’s future as a major European power.
