Blood Stem Cell Transplant
A blood stem cell transplant is a medical procedure that replaces damaged or diseased blood-forming cells with healthy ones. These stem cells can come from a donor (allogeneic transplant) or the patient’s own body (autologous transplant). The process often involves first destroying the faulty cells with chemotherapy or radiation, then infusing the healthy stem cells into the bloodstream. These cells travel to the bone marrow, where they establish new, healthy blood cells. This treatment is commonly used for conditions like leukemia, lymphoma, and certain blood disorders, helping to restore normal blood production and immune function.
