Black Widow (Latrodectus)
Black Widow (Latrodectus) spiders are venomous arachnids known for their shiny black bodies and distinctive red or orange hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. They are typically found in dark, cluttered areas like sheds or basements. While their venom contains neurotoxins that can cause pain, muscle cramps, and nausea, bites are rarely lethal to healthy adults. Black Widows generally bite in self-defense and are not aggressive. Treatment often involves cleaning the bite site and using pain relievers. They play a helpful role in controlling pest populations.
