Bivalves

Bivalves are a group of aquatic animals that have two hinged shells, like clams, oysters, mussels, and scallops. They live in both freshwater and marine environments. Bivalves filter water to extract food particles, mainly microscopic plankton and organic matter, making them important for ecosystems. They lack a head and radula (a tongue-like feeding organ), relying on their gills for both respiration and feeding. Their shells provide protection, and some, like oysters, produce pearls. Bivalves play vital roles in water filtration, habitat creation, and are also a valuable food source for humans and other predators.
