Biosand Filters

Biosand filters are a type of water purification system designed to remove contaminants from drinking water. They consist of a simple container filled with layers of sand and gravel, where water is poured in from the top. As water flows through these layers, harmful bacteria, viruses, and particles are trapped, while cleaner water seeps out from the bottom. The filter is biological in nature, as beneficial microbes grow within the sand and help break down remaining pollutants. Biosand filters are sustainable, low-cost, and effective, making them suitable for communities with limited access to clean drinking water.
