Biogenic Methane
Biogenic methane is methane gas produced naturally by microorganisms through the process of decomposition of organic material. This occurs in environments such as wetlands, rice paddies, landfills, and the guts of ruminant animals like cows. These microorganisms break down organic matter in oxygen-free conditions, releasing methane as a byproduct. Unlike fossil fuel-derived methane, biogenic methane is part of the Earth's natural carbon cycle and is considered a renewable source of energy. However, if released into the atmosphere, it acts as a potent greenhouse gas, contributing to climate change.
