Biofilm Associated Infections

Biofilm-associated infections occur when bacteria form a protective, slimy layer called a biofilm on surfaces inside the body, such as medical devices or tissues. This biofilm shields the bacteria from antibiotics and the immune system, making infections difficult to treat. Common sites include catheters, prosthetic joints, and teeth (plaque). These infections can lead to persistent, chronic health problems, often requiring specialized treatment or removal of the contaminated device. Understanding and managing biofilms are essential in preventing and controlling these resistant infections.
