Betye Saar

Betye Saar is an acclaimed African American artist known for her mixed-media works that address themes of race, feminism, and spirituality. Born in 1926, she gained prominence in the 1970s as part of the Black Arts Movement. Saar's art often incorporates found objects, creating poignant collages and assemblages that challenge stereotypes and explore her heritage. One of her most famous pieces, "The Liberation of Aunt Jemima," reinterprets the image of the traditionally stereotyped Black woman, transforming it into a symbol of empowerment.
