Berta Cáceres
Berta Cáceres was a Honduran environmental and indigenous rights activist known for her strong opposition to harmful mining and hydroelectric projects in her country. As a member of the Lenca people, she co-founded the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), advocating for environmental protection and indigenous land rights. Cáceres raised international awareness about human rights abuses and environmental degradation. Tragically, she was assassinated in March 2016, highlighting the dangers activists face in defending natural resources and human rights in regions affected by corporate interests. Her legacy continues to inspire efforts for environmental justice and indigenous autonomy.
