Bernadotte's election as king
Bernadotte, a French general during the Napoleonic Wars, was elected king of Sweden in 1818 after the death of King Charles XIII. His selection was unusual; he was not of royal blood but gained support due to his military reputation and connections. Sweden sought stability and a leader who could strengthen ties with other nations. Bernadotte, adopting the name Charles John, helped modernize Sweden and steer it away from the Napoleonic conflicts. His election marked the beginning of the current royal lineage, establishing a constitutional monarchy that endures today.
