Beriberi
Beriberi is a condition caused by a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1), essential for converting food into energy for the body's cells. It primarily affects the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Symptoms can include weakness, fatigue, nerve problems such as numbness or tingling, difficulty walking, and in severe cases, heart issues like rapid heartbeat or swelling. Beriberi is most common in regions with diets lacking in thiamine-rich foods like grains, beans, and fortified foods. Treating the deficiency with thiamine supplements usually improves symptoms, especially if diagnosed early.
