Benzoic Acid
Benzoic acid is a naturally occurring compound found in some fruits and plants, used mainly as a preservative in food and beverages to prevent bacterial growth. Chemically, it is an organic acid with the formula C₆H₅COOH, characterized by a benzene ring attached to a carboxyl group. It has antifungal and antimicrobial properties, making it effective in extending shelf life. Benzoic acid can also be used in the manufacture of plastics, dyes, and medications. While generally safe in small amounts, excessive intake can cause health issues, so regulatory limits are set for its use in consumables.
