benign prostatic hyperplasia
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, which is located below the bladder in men. As the prostate grows with age, it can press against the urethra—the tube that carries urine out of the bladder—causing symptoms like difficulty starting urination, a weak stream, frequent urges to urinate, or feeling incomplete bladder emptying. BPH is common in older men and does not increase the risk of prostate cancer. While it can affect quality of life, treatments are available to manage symptoms, including medications, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery.
