belimumab
Belimumab is a medication used to treat systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues. It works by targeting and blocking a protein called BLyS (B-lymphocyte stimulator), which plays a key role in the survival of abnormal immune cells that cause inflammation. By inhibiting BLyS, belimumab helps reduce disease activity and flare-ups, leading to better control of symptoms. It's typically used alongside other medications for lupus and administered as an infusion every few weeks under medical supervision.
