Battle of Crete

The Battle of Crete took place during World War II from May 20 to June 1, 1941. It was the first major airborne invasion in history, where German forces launched an assault on the Greek island of Crete. Allied troops, including British, Australian, and New Zealand forces, defended the island. Despite fierce resistance, the Germans ultimately captured Crete. The battle showcased the effectiveness of airborne operations but also led to heavy casualties on both sides. The loss of Crete allowed Axis powers to consolidate control in the Mediterranean, impacting subsequent Allied efforts in the region.
