Battle of Alcácer Quibir
The Battle of Alcácer Quibir, fought in 1578 in Morocco, was a significant conflict between the Moroccan Sultanate under Abu Abdallah Mohammed II (Abu Marwan) and the Portuguese forces led by King Sebastian I. The battle resulted in a catastrophic defeat for the Portuguese, with King Sebastian and many of his soldiers killed or captured. This loss led to political upheaval in Portugal, ending its short-lived attempt at empire expansion in North Africa, and indirectly contributed to the decline of Portugal’s global influence. The battle is also linked to the death of the Portuguese prince, triggering a succession crisis.
