Battle of Adwa

The Battle of Adwa, fought on March 1, 1896, was a pivotal conflict between the Ethiopian Empire and Italian colonial forces. Ethiopia, under Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu, successfully defended its sovereignty against Italy’s attempt to colonize it. Utilizing strategic tactics, a large and united Ethiopian army defeated the Italians, who underestimated Ethiopia’s determination and military strength. This victory preserved Ethiopia’s independence, making it one of the few African nations to resist colonization during the Scramble for Africa, and it became a symbol of African resistance and pride.
