Batten Disease (NCL)
Batten Disease, also known as Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL), is a rare, inherited neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive loss of brain function. It typically manifests in childhood with symptoms like vision problems, behavioral changes, seizures, and cognitive decline. Over time, affected individuals experience declining motor skills, blindness, and eventually loss of independence. NCL is caused by genetic mutations leading to the accumulation of harmful substances in nerve cells, which damages their function. There is no cure, and the disease usually progresses over several years, requiring supportive care to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
