Bastion Point
Bastion Point is a significant site in New Zealand, known for its role in a land occupation protest during the late 1970s. It involved Māori activists advocating for the return of land taken from their ancestors. From 1977 to 1978, they occupied the land in Auckland, drawing attention to issues of indigenous rights and land ownership. The protest culminated in a police eviction, but it sparked national and international discussion on Māori rights and led to greater awareness of Treaty of Waitangi issues, influencing subsequent policies and legal reforms concerning Māori land and rights.
