Basque Statute

The Basque Statute, formally known as the Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country, is a legal framework that grants the Basque region self-governance. It defines the region’s political status, powers, and organization, allowing it to manage areas like education, health, and transportation independently within the Spanish state. Approved in 1979, it recognizes the Basque Country’s unique identity and cultural heritage, establishing its own institutions and legal system while remaining part of Spain. Essentially, it enables the Basque region to govern many aspects of its internal affairs while respecting the broader Spanish constitution.
