Basic Psychological Needs Theory
Basic Psychological Needs Theory, part of Self-Determination Theory, suggests that humans have three innate needs essential for well-being and motivation: autonomy (control over one’s actions), competence (feeling effective and capable), and relatedness (meaningful connection with others). When these needs are satisfied, people experience greater motivation, psychological health, and overall happiness. Conversely, when these needs are thwarted or unmet, individuals may feel distressed, less motivated, or disconnected. This theory emphasizes that supporting these core needs is fundamental for fostering positive psychological growth and well-being across various aspects of life.
