Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills

Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS) are the everyday social skills needed to have simple, face-to-face interactions, such as greeting someone, asking questions, or making small talk. These skills enable individuals to communicate effectively in familiar situations with peers and acquaintances. BICS develop naturally through regular social contact and typically become well-established within a couple of years of language exposure. They are essential for building relationships and participating comfortably in social environments but do not necessarily indicate advanced or academic language proficiency.
