barbiturates

Barbiturates are a class of drugs derived from barbituric acid, primarily used to induce sleep, reduce anxiety, or as anticonvulsants. They work by depressing the central nervous system, which slows brain activity and produces calming effects. While effective, they carry a high risk of dependence, overdose, and adverse side effects, especially if misused or combined with other depressants. Due to these risks, many barbiturates have been replaced by safer medications for anxiety and sleep disorders, but they are still used in specific medical settings under strict supervision.
