Balkan conflicts

The Balkan conflicts were a series of ethnic and nationalist wars in Southeastern Europe during the 1990s, following the breakup of Yugoslavia. They involved various ethnic groups—Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks, and others—fighting for independence, sovereignty, or territorial control. The conflicts were marked by severe violence, including atrocities and ethnic cleansing, driven by deep historical grievances, political instability, and competing national identities. International efforts aimed to restore peace and stability, resulting in peace agreements and the eventual end of hostilities, but the region continued to face challenges related to ethnic tensions and reconciliation.
