Bali Nine case
The Bali Nine case involved nine Australians arrested in 2005 at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport with 8.3 kilograms of heroin concealed in their luggage. They planned to smuggle the drugs into Australia. The Indonesian authorities prosecuted them for drug trafficking, which carries the death penalty under Indonesian law. Despite appeals and international attention, eight of the nine received death sentences; one was released early. The case highlighted the risks of drug trafficking and Indonesia’s strict drug laws, and it sparked global debate about capital punishment and justice.
