Baibars was a powerful 13th-century Mamluk leader and sultan who played a key role in resisting and defeating the Mongol invasions in the Middle East. Originally a slave soldier, he rose through military skill and leadership to become Sultan of Egypt and Syria. Baibars unified various Muslim forces, strengthened his state's defenses, and expanded territory. He is known for his strategic military campaigns, including notable victories at Ain Jalut, which halted Mongol advances. His reign helped to preserve Islamic control in the region and established the Mamluks as a dominant power in the Eastern Mediterranean for decades.
