Atrax (genus)

Atrax is a genus of highly venomous funnel-web spiders found in eastern Australia, particularly around the Sydney region. These spiders build dense, silk-lined burrows and are most active at night. Despite their aggressive reputation, bites to humans are rare but potentially dangerous, causing severe pain and other symptoms. The most well-known species is Atrax robustus, commonly called the Sydney funnel-web spider. They play a role in controlling insect populations, but due to their venom's potency, prompt medical attention is essential if bitten. Scientists also study their venom for potential medical applications.
