Assistance animals are specially trained animals that help people with disabilities lead more independent lives. Common types include service dogs, which assist individuals with physical or sensory disabilities, and therapy animals, which provide comfort and emotional support. Unlike emotional support animals, assistance animals undergo specific training to perform tasks directly related to their handler’s disability. Laws, like the Americans with Disabilities Act in the U.S., protect the rights of individuals with assistance animals, allowing them access to public spaces. However, these laws do not cover emotional support animals in the same way, as they do not require specialized training.
