Aryabhata's Astronomical Model
Aryabhata, an ancient Indian mathematician and astronomer, proposed a revolutionary model of the universe around 500 CE. He suggested that the Earth rotates on its axis, explaining day and night. Aryabhata also described the motion of planets and the moon, accounting for their orbits around the Earth, which he placed at the center of the universe. His work included calculations for eclipses and the distance to celestial bodies, laying the groundwork for later astronomical studies. Aryabhata's approach combined mathematical precision with observational astronomy, marking a significant advance in our understanding of the cosmos.
