Arusha Accords

The Arusha Accords are a peace agreement signed in 1993 to end the Rwandan Civil War between the Hutu-led government and the Tutsi-dominated Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). The accords aimed to establish power-sharing, create a transitional government, and promote national unity. However, the agreement faced significant challenges and was ultimately unable to prevent the 1994 genocide, when extremist Hutu forces slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Despite its failure to prevent violence, the Arusha Accords are an important step in Rwanda’s peace process and international efforts to resolve conflicts through negotiation.
