Artigas' League

Artigas' League was a short-lived regional alliance formed in 1811 in what is now Uruguay, led by José Gervasio Artigas. It aimed to unify various local groups to resist Spanish rule and promote regional autonomy. The League sought to create a federation of self-governing provinces rather than a centralized government, emphasizing local rights and independence. Although it initially gained support, internal disagreements and external pressures from Spain and neighboring territories prevented its lasting establishment. The League represents an early effort toward Uruguayan unity and independence, laying groundwork for future national identity.
