Arawaks

The Arawaks were Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean and northern South America, known for their rich culture and history before European contact. They cultivated crops like cassava, yams, and maize, and skilled in fishing, pottery, and weaving. The term often refers to the TaĆno subgroup, who inhabited the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas. Their society was organized into clans and they had complex spiritual beliefs. Unfortunately, contact with Europeans led to significant decline due to disease, conquest, and colonization. Today, descendants and cultural influences of the Arawaks remain in the Caribbean region.
