Antonio Cánovas del Castillo
Antonio Cánovas del Castillo was a prominent Spanish politician and historian in the late 19th century. He played a key role in shaping Spain’s political landscape after the tumultuous 19th century, promoting stability through a system called the "Restoration," which restored the monarchy and established a constitutional monarchy. Cánovas served multiple times as Prime Minister and worked to balance power between the monarchy, aristocracy, and emerging political parties. His efforts aimed to maintain order and prevent revolutionary upheaval, although his political approach also faced criticism for limiting democratic development. He was assassinated in 1897, marking a significant moment in Spanish history.
