antibiotic-associated diarrhea
Antibiotic-associated diarrhea occurs when antibiotics, used to treat infections, disrupt the balance of healthy bacteria in the gut. This imbalance can lead to increased growth of harmful bacteria or reduced diversity of beneficial bacteria, resulting in diarrhea. It often happens during or after antibiotic treatment and varies in severity. Most cases are mild and resolve quickly, but in some instances, it can lead to serious conditions like infections with bacteria such as Clostridioides difficile. Maintaining hydration and, in some cases, taking probiotics or adjusting medication can help manage or prevent this side effect.
