Antibiotic-associated colitis
Antibiotic-associated colitis is an inflammation of the colon that occurs after using certain antibiotics. These medicines can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut, sometimes allowing harmful bacteria like Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) to grow excessively. This overgrowth produces toxins that cause symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever, and in severe cases, more serious complications. It’s important to monitor symptoms during and after antibiotic use and seek medical attention if you experience severe or persistent gastrointestinal issues. Treatment often involves stopping the antibiotic (if appropriate) and using specific medications to eliminate the harmful bacteria.
