Ankle sprain classification
Ankle sprains are classified based on the severity of ligament damage. Grade 1 is mild, involving slight stretching or small tears with minimal pain and swelling; walking is usually manageable. Grade 2 is moderate, with partial tearing, causing more pain, swelling, and some difficulty walking. Grade 3 is severe, involving a complete tear of the ligament, resulting in significant instability, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving or bearing weight. This classification helps guide treatment and recovery planning.
