Anglo-Iraqi Treaty

The Anglo-Iraqi Treaty of 1930 was an agreement between Britain and Iraq that allowed Britain to maintain military presence and influence in Iraq even after its independence. In exchange, Britain provided Iraq with military aid and support. The treaty was seen as limiting Iraq’s full sovereignty, since Britain retained certain rights to defend its interests and control key aspects of Iraqi defense policies. While it marked a step toward independence, many Iraqis viewed it as an unequal arrangement that kept Britain influential over their nation's affairs.
