Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS)
Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS) is a genetic condition where a person who is genetically male (with XY chromosomes) is unable to respond to androgens, which are male hormones like testosterone. As a result, individuals with AIS typically develop physical traits associated with females, despite having male genetic makeup. There are different forms of AIS, ranging from complete to partial. Those with complete AIS may identify as female and have a female appearance but do not have a uterus or ovaries. This condition highlights the complexity of sex development and the distinction between biological sex and gender identity.
