Anaerobic energy system

The anaerobic energy system provides quick energy for high-intensity activities lasting about 10 seconds to 2 minutes, like sprinting or heavy lifting. It doesn't require oxygen; instead, it uses stored energy sources such as glycogen in muscles. During this process, glucose is broken down to produce energy and a byproduct called lactic acid. While it’s fast, it can’t sustain activity long because lactic acid buildup causes muscle fatigue. This system is essential for short, intense efforts, acting as an immediate energy source before relying on other systems for longer activity.
