Alu elements

Alu elements are short DNA sequences, about 300 base pairs long, that can copy and insert themselves into different parts of the human genome. They are a type of transposable element, often called "jumping genes," and make up over 10% of our DNA. While many Alu insertions are harmless, some can disrupt genes or regulatory regions, potentially leading to genetic diversity or disease. Their ability to multiply and move has played a role in human evolution by creating genetic variation.
