Altitude Illness

Altitude illness occurs when your body struggles to adjust to lower oxygen levels at high elevations, typically above 8,000 feet. The reduced oxygen can cause symptoms like headache, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, and swelling. There are three main types: Acute Mountain Sickness (mild symptoms), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (fluid in the lungs), and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (brain swelling). Prevention involves gradual ascent, staying well-hydrated, and avoiding alcohol. Severe cases require immediate descent and medical attention to prevent life-threatening complications.
