Alpha-1 antitrypsin

Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) is a protein produced by the liver that helps protect the lungs from damage caused by enzymes released during inflammation or infection. In people with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, the body doesn't produce enough of this protein, leading to increased risk of lung diseases like emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This condition can also affect the liver. Diagnosis often involves blood tests, and treatment options include replacing the missing protein, quitting smoking, and managing lung health to prevent progression of the disease.
