Allied invasion of Italy
The Allied invasion of Italy, beginning with the Sicily invasion in 1943, was a military campaign during World War II aimed at removing Italy from the Axis powers and opening a new front in Europe. Allied forces, primarily from the United States and Britain, fought their way through Sicily and mainland Italy, facing tough defenses and rugged terrain. The campaign resulted in the eventual surrender of Italy in 1943 and contributed to weakening Axis control in Europe. It was a strategic effort to accelerate the defeat of Nazi Germany by opening additional fronts and disrupting Axis supply lines.
