Salvador Allende was a Chilean physician and politician who became the first Marxist to be elected president in Latin America, serving from 1970 until 1973. He aimed to create a socialist society through democratic means, implementing reforms in healthcare, education, and land redistribution. In September 1973, amidst a military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet, Allende died during the takeover.
