Alberta political history
Alberta’s political history is shaped by its resource economy, especially oil and gas. Initially governed mainly by conservative parties, it experienced shifts with the rise of progressive and social democratic movements in the 20th century. The Progressive Conservatives held power from 1971 to 2015, emphasizing economic growth and resource development. In 2015, the New Democratic Party (NDP) gained power, prioritizing social programs and environmental concerns. After 2019, the United Conservative Party took charge, blending fiscal conservatism with resource-focused policies. Alberta’s politics reflect ongoing debates over resource management, environmental issues, and economic diversification.
